Physical and chemical properties
Hydrophilic fumed silica is made by hydrolyzing volatile chlorosilanes in an oxyhydrogen flame. Chemically, this loose white silica powder consists of high-purity amorphous silica. Hydrophilic silica is wetted by water and can be dispersed in water. It has good temperature resistance, chemical resistance and thixotropy.

Hydrophobic fumed silica is produced by chemical reaction of hydrophilic silica with reactive silanes or silicone oils such as chlorosilane, hexamethyldisilazane and polydimethylsiloxane. The treated fumed silica powder is water-resistant and no longer disperses in water.
Hydrophobic silica is very effective in thixotropy in polar adhesives and sealants such as isocyanate resins, epoxy resins, silicone resins, polyurethane resins and vinyl ester resins. They can be used to reinforce silicones without thickening.
Hydrophobic fumed silica improves water resistance and powder flowability in moisture-sensitive formulations such as cosmetics.
It has excellent storage stability and processing ability and is widely used as an anti-settling agent and anti-sagging agent for pigments.
Six functions of hydrophobic fumed silica:
1. Thickening and thixotropy: Thickening without thinning, adjusting thixotropy. Fumed silica treated with special process can play ultra-low thickening and ultra-low thixotropy.
2. High reinforcement: Improve the mechanical properties of materials, increase toughness and hardness, enhance tensile and tear resistance, and extend durability and service life.
3. Anti-sedimentation: Improve the mixing uniformity of liquid materials, prevent the agglomeration and stratification of effective ingredients, and improve the storage stability of products.
4. Anti-sagging: Prevent the sagging phenomenon of liquid construction, and the dripping and edge thickening caused by gravity.
5. Anti-caking: Adsorb and isolate moisture between particles, prevent adhesion and aggregation of particles or powdered products, and increase storage stability.
6. Hydrophobicity: Oleophilicity and low hygroscopicity, high contact angle (above 140°) make hydrophobic fumed silica have excellent hydrophobic effect.
Application
Hydrophobic fumed silica is suitable for the following industries:
1. Adhesives: can thicken, thixotropy, and reinforce, improve bonding strength to prevent sagging and collapse during curing of the adhesive.
2. Coatings: It has thickening, anti-sagging, and anti-settling effects, and improves the corrosion resistance, weather resistance, and scratch resistance of coatings.
3. Silicone: Improves the physical properties of fluorosilicone rubber, increases tensile strength and tear strength, and is resistant to aging and scratches.
4. Resin composite materials: Improves substrate strength, wear resistance, and strengthens the bonding strength between materials, and can thicken and thixotropy.
5. Foaming materials: Improve tensile strength, hardness, and permanent compression deformation, increase insulation, durability, and prevent corrosion.
6. Ink: Good rheology control effect, making ink spraying more uniform, and has anti-sagging and anti-settling effects.
7. Medicine: Pharmaceutical excipient colloidal silica is used as an excipient, sustained-release agent, disintegrant, and flow aid, etc.
8. Printing materials: Make 3D printing consumables lighter and improve strength, and help the toner and carbon powder flow and prevent caking.
Packaging and Storage
Pallet packaging methods include: 10 kg packaging (180 kg/pallet).
Store in original airtight container in dry conditions for at least 24 months. At the same time, the "best before" of the product will be indicated on each product label.
Storage time exceeding the best before date marked on the label does not mean that the product can no longer be used. However, in this case, in order to ensure product quality, it is necessary to re-check the relevant properties of the product.
